Being a part of a throwaway society, something about our baby things tells us to hang on to them. During pregnancy, many people will offer their old nursery furniture and crib bedding. Because babies are expensive business, be grateful for those offerings of baby bedding and baby cribs. When picking bedding and crib for your baby, do a little research to make sure the products are safe and trustworthy.

Your baby's first bed is very important whether it is Moses basket or a crib. While you are refinishing your used baby crib, take the time to make sure it will be safe for your baby. Even if the baby bedding looks untouched, when you receive it you should inspect it for safety. If the cradle is of wicker, check up the joints and remove any loose things. The mattress must be replaced as it would have definitely become bad. When you are putting the bed skirt on, check it over so you can snip off any loose threads or dangling pieces of material that the baby might rip off and put in his/her mouth.

Baby can be very mischievous so be certain that if within reach your child cannot get hold of material that has any loose threads or other choking hazards. Purchase new bedding for your crib if you are able to because the majority of organizations that are concerned about the safety of baby furniture, such as the Juvenile Products Manufacturer's Association (JPMA) in the United States and British Standards (BS) in the UK have advised consumers to purchase new furniture and bedding, if at all possible. Go in for JPMA or BS 'KITE' marked products. They are quite safe.

I have no problem with second-hand baby things as long as you make sure that they are perfectly safe - it isn't environmentally sound to throw away good furniture and baby bedding. Your baby will spend many hours in his crib, so it is important to carefully examine and test it for safety. Here are some things to keep in mind when inspecting the safety of your baby equipment. Before anything else, you want to make sure there is no chipped, loose, or dangerous paint and no jagged edges that your baby's clothes will get caught on. Most importantly check the bars of the crib to assure that they are closer than 2 3/8 inches apart. The header and footer boards need to be solid having no holes, this will protect your infant from getting his/her head caught. A sturdy crib requires tight joints and fixings. You should be able to raise and lower the side rails with one hand and the rails must be secure when raised. The final point to verify is that the mattress is clean and firm and the top of the side rail is at least 22 inches above the mattress.

I think it is important that each new baby should get a new mattress, but make sure the mattress fits well in the crib before buying. Nursery bedding can present a risk of suffocation, so tie bumper strings tightly and ensure that the baby can't pull down the bumper, or simply remove the bumper. Avoid duvets, quilts or sheepskin totally as they would overheat. Place a thermometer in the room in addition to using a combination of blankets and sheets. You will be astonished at a baby's ability to climb and reach things, so cribs must be kept away from curtains, window blinds, cords, lamps or nearby furniture onto which they might lift themselves.

You can have a wonderful time with your baby that is growing fast.
