Not so long ago cosmetic surgery and liposuction were considered something that women only did. These days thanks to technological advancements and new techniques having cosmetic surgery is easier and safer than it ever was. Maybe that's the reason there that now large numbers of guys are trying their hand at cosmetic surgery. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons liposuction for men accounted for 11% (or 33,000 ) of all liposuction procedures in 2007.

Men choose liposuction for exactly the same reason that women do, to get a sexier body that looks better both dressed and undressed. While it is a known fact that men lose weight quicker and easier than women, they are still plagued with some fat deposits that resist all efforts of diet and exercise to remove. Love handles they are called and yet no one really loves them or wants to hang on to them.

Abdominal liposuction for men has increased greatly in the last few years because of these stubborn love handles. For many men the only way to get a set of six pack abs is by having a liposuction procedure.

Perhaps even more popular for the guys is facial liposuction. In this case there's really no alternative because there's really no other way to get rid of fat on the neck, chin and jaw. It's hard to believe, but several ounces of fat taken from a man's chin and jawline will make him look years younger. Everyone wants to look younger so now men are getting liposuction to slim their jaw line and rid themselves of double chins.

Gynecomastia is another area where liposuction for men has also been a great help. Gynecomastia is when excess fat on the chest makes it appear as if a man has breasts. As you can imagine this condition will seriously affect both a man's self-confidence and his self-esteem. Liposuction is being used successfully to remove excess fat and get rid of many men's gynecomastia.

The fat removal during the liposuction process is done with a tool called a cannula, which is a thin tube that functions like a vacuum and is used to suck the fat cells out of the targeted body part. There are a few different liposuction techniques that can be used depending on the severity of the deposited fat, the body part being treated, and the patient's condition.

Liposuction is the only way to spot reduce fat and while the fat cells are permanently removed, if you can't adopt to a new diet and exercise plan then new fat cells will form. This means that a healthy diet and exercise plan need to be adopted if you want to keep your new look after your liposuction surgery.

It's important to note here that liposuction for men is not a way to lose weight. You should already be within twenty pounds of your goal weight and should be ready to maintain that weight after your liposuction.

As with any surgical procedure there are risks associated with liposuction. Scarring, excessive tissue removal, bleeding and infection can occur, although they are very infrequent. Minimize your own risk and research your doctor prior to your surgery. Only work with surgeons who are licensed and board certified to perform liposuction procedures. The surgeon should also have experience with liposuction for men. When exercise and diet fail it's time to see what liposuction can do to help you bring out the six pack.
