Meaning "elderly eye" in Greek, presbyopia is an eye condition that mostly affects people from the age of forty years and upwards. The main symptoms are blurred vision when carrying out an activity such as reading a book or using a computer. Unfortunately, presbyopia cannot be prevented, but the symptoms can be controlled to an extent.

One of the first signs of the condition is when people have to hold reading material such as books and newspapers at arm's length to be able to focus correctly on the words. If they need to concentrate their vision in this manner then they may suffer headaches from eye strain.

Presbyopia is not due to the same factors as astigmatism, farsightedness, or nearsightedness. These eye problems are caused by the shape of the eyeball as well as genetic problems, but presbyopia is thought to be caused by a thickening, and lack of flexibility, in the lens of the eye due to changes in the proteins that are present. Also it is believed that the muscle fibers that surround the lens loose a degree of their elasticity.

To treat presbyopia and correct the vision it is possible to use eyewear or undergo surgery. If you choose eyewear then you can be given bifocal lenses or progressive addition lenses.

Bifocal spectacles have two different strengths within the lens - the lower part has the greatest strength for close up work, while the main part will have a prescription for better distant vision. Progressive addition lenses differ from bifocal lenses in so much that they have more gradual transition form one prescription strength to the other.

If you believe that there is nothing currently wrong with your distant vision, then you can simply wear reading glasses when you require improving the way in which you see objects and matter up close. Also reading glasses can be used by people that wear contact lenses who also suffer from presbyopia.

It is a fact of life that as we get older our eye sight will worsen. Whatever type of eyewear you use, it is important to have regular check ups so as you can be sure that you have the correct prescription.

It is also possible to undergo surgery for Presbyopia. Many of these procedures are very new. For example there is what is known as Conductive Keratoplasty treatment, this uses radio waves to alter the curvature of the cornea. Also there is LASIK surgery which uses a laser to alter the shape of the cornea.
